The Leon is mechanically identical to the Golf but typically £1,000–£1,500 cheaper for the same year and mileage. If you need maximum space for the money, nothing touches the Octavia at this budget. The boot is bigger than many executive saloons. Based on Golf underpinnings, it's reliable and refined, but you'd never know you were saving money — it just feels substantial and grown-up. The estate version is one of the best load-luggers in Europe at any price.

At £7,000 you can find 2016–2018 models with 70,000 miles, or older 2014 models with 40,000. High-mileage motorway cars are often in better mechanical condition than low-mileage city cars. Age and condition matter more than the odometer.
